Dewsbury Road Public Art Commissions
The Tetley is working in partnership with Leeds City Council and the Dewsbury Road Town Team to commission two ‘gateway’ features for Dewsbury Road, the southern gateway to Leeds city centre.
Dewsbury Road is the main road through a lively community in south Leeds with a large residential population and local amenities that include shops (with many independent businesses), pubs, places of worship, schools and services including the Dewsbury Road One Stop Centre, a focal point for the community. It is one of the most diverse areas of Leeds, but also contains areas of social and economic deprivation.
The three project partners propose to commission two ‘gateway’ features to help create a sense of identity for this district. These features will mark the entry points to the Dewsbury Road local area, delineating a length of the road itself between two agreed points – the One Stop Centre to the north, and the Fire Station/Trentham Street to the south.
They are looking to appoint a contemporary artist or collective as the principal lead on the commissions. The project forms a key part of The Tetley’s work with communities in south Leeds.
